At this point, making New Year’s resolutions just seems like voluntarily removing things from the table, and I’m at a loss as to why that ought to appeal. I’ve got professionals in my life I pay to tell me I need to remove things from my table, and I think I’ll wait until they insist.
Of course, not all resolutions remove things from the table. Some resolutions are designed to add extensions to the table to make room for more. I like those.
So, when I take the occasion of the new year to resolve that I do something new, I’m thinking mainly how I can do more to make this publication more valuable to my readers. There are a few ways to do this. I can publish more often. I can work to provide a more thoughtful analysis. I can resolve to break more news. I can work to bring more ideas and events to light that bring more meaning to the world of wine.
I think, frankly, of all those options, the last would make Fermentation more useful. So…
I resolve to provide Fermentation readers with more revelations of events, occurrences, movements, and changes that may not be directly related to the world of wine, but that reflect or have a connection with or impact upon the world of wine.
Part of this is putting a differently shaped lens on events that are seemingly disconnected from wine, but when looked at differently in fact enlightens our understanding of the wine world, the business of wine, and the culture of wine.
