Because I Want To Beat Them

On the question of motivation and reform in the alcohol industry

In the wake of my recent 5-part series concerning the views on direct shipping held by the Wine & Spirit Wholesalers of America and their untrustworthy status, I have received a few interesting emails. Among them was one that asked me, “What motivates you to take on these people and keep going after all these years?”

THIS is a very good question! And it deserves an answer.

Motivation is an interesting thing and pinpointing it within ourselves requires more introspection than you might think. I think like many people, my motivations are varied.

I WANT TO BEAT THEM
This motivation is connected to but different than wanting to win. When I watch m San Francisco Giants play ball, I want them to win because they are MY giants and I want them to succeed. Even when they play the evil LA Dodgers, I want the Giants to win more than I want the Giants to beat the Dodgers (though it’s close.)
