When it comes to identifying the benefits of drinking wine, measurable impacts on longevity and disease frequency have been the coin of the realm. Outside those who have experienced it, what rarely gets discussed or considered is the spiritual aspect of wine drinking. How would you even measure such a thing?

Well, thank goodness for the devoted academics.

Consider sitting down in a pleasant wine bar in Portugal by yourself, with a friend, or with a group and sipping on a couple of glasses of 2018 Quinta da Lapa Reserva Syrah. What would be the impact on your consciousness, on your focus, on your imagination, on your state of bliss?

These are the kinds of questions that four researchers had when, in 2021, they carried out a study to measure the “Effects of red wine on consciousness in a naturalistic setting” and published their findings in the academic journal Plos One. The findings were fascinating—and reassuring.
