Yes. The irresponsible way in which institutions with an anti-alcohol bias have been misrepresenting the impact that alcohol has on health is very problematic all on its own. But it’s important to keep in mind the primary reason we are concerned with this and why I write about it: The irresponsible message that there is no safe level of alcohol consumption will lead to debilitating restrictions on the wine industry.
We don’t have to guess what these restrictions will look like when they come. Daily powerful and respected medical, political, and activist groups are promoting those restrictions. This month the World Cancer Research Fund International released its Policy Position on Alcohol and Cancer Risk. This document is designed to influence national governments and sub-national governments on policies it believes will reduce alcohol consumption. If its recommendations for government action are adopted in the United States they will cripple the wine industry.
